Kill Expectation

June 22, 2023

TLDR: Don’t temper your expectations – get rid of them altogether. Go into every experience with a completely open mind.

College radio changed my life. I used to stay up as late as I could as a kid listening to KCSB to all the hip hop, drum and bass, techno, and whatever weird ass shows people used to have. It’s still a thing all these years later, thank God. I’m glad radio is going strong.

KCSB is a college radio station that broadcasts from UCSB in Goleta (it’s not really in Santa Barbara). A bunch of students have their own shows that span all kinds of different genres. It’s been a staple in my car/life for as long as I remember, especially since I moved back to the states in 2018.

A few years ago there was a girl that had a morning show where she played kind of chill/relaxing music. One morning on my way to work she started her show by saying something that stayed with me. I don’t exactly remember how she said it, but she basically said that you should never go into a situation with any expectation, for better or worse. It’s so god damn true.

Sometimes we go into a situation with a negative expectation and we manifest a negative situation. Sometimes we have a really high expectation for something and are disappointed. But the best times are when you absolutely don’t know what to expect and have the most amazing time of your life.

I’ve personally had so many amazing experiences like this, and along with my wife we’ve had so many more. From traveling to warehouse parties, to food and hiking.

Expectations keep you from living in the moment, so live in the now and keep wonder alive. Everything will turn out just right.
